There are many versions of stories for the origin of traditional Southern American face jug. One theory says that the face jugs were first made by African slaves who worked on American plantations for Voodoo purpose. Another theory speculates face jugs are used as tomb stones to keep the devil away as African slaves are not allowed to have one. The face jugs are never pretty. In fact, they are ugly (which can be used by parents to scare children away from the stored items, such as alcohol).
The Doubled Faced Gray Poupon Face Jug above is an unique jug which is handmade and sculpted by Lucille. The face jug measures 4.5″ tall x 2.75″ in diameter. The price of the face jug is $40 (available on Etsy).
