Who invented doughnut?  There are several theories on the origin of doughnut (a.k.a. donut).  The first theory says that Dutch settles introduced doughnuts into North America.  In the 19th century, the dessert is known as a type of oliekoek, which means a sweetened cake fried in fat (which doughnut is very fattening).

However an American did not agreed with that statement.  His name is Hanson Gregory.  He claimed the ring-shaped dessert was invented by him using tin pepper box in a lime-trading ship in 1847.  At that time he was only 16 years old.  Anthropologist Paul R. Mullins may have proved that Hanson Gregory is lying, as Paul found doughnut recipe was mentioned in an 1803 English volume cookbook.
